Motorcycle brake maintenance is extremely important for any bike owner, regular checks and maintenance of the brakes and brake pads will ensure your brakes are always in tip top condition. It’s pretty easy to do brake maintenance yourself if you know what you’re doing. If you do not have any experience, it is highly recommended that you bring your bike into a mechanic to do it for you; it will also be a guarantee that all of the motorcycle parts and accessories you need will be there.
However, if you are simply changing your brake pads, a lot of people would rather do it themselves than hire a mechanic. It’s pretty simple and you can save money too!
You’ll want to make sure that you have all of your tools and parts well organized before you start.
Simply start out by taking out the calipers and retaining pins from the forks, you will do this by unscrewing the mounting bolts. Put aside your bolts where you need to use them shortly.
At this time, your brake pads should fall out quite easily. Now is the time to take to thoroughly inspect your brakes to make sure that they are not excessively worn out, chipped or severely cracked.
Clean any grime or dust that has accumulated in the pistons and check that there are no cracks or leaks coming from your calipers. Insert your pistons into their proper location using your screwdriver, and also make sure that there is sufficient amount of break fluid in the master cylinder.
Now you are ready to install your new brake pads. While doing this, make sure that you do not get the pads dirty with grime or debris. You can now install your brake pads into their position with the pins and clips and bolts.
Before you head out make sure that everything is nice and secure, don’t forget to check your brake fluid one last time.
